Who We Are
Hello! We’re Janet & Peter Kramka, the owners of Backyard Blooms–a small, suburban flower farm with big heart. We nurture soil, seed, and stem to provide you with unique varieties of healthy, fresh cut flowers. Our yard is brimming with rows of heirloom annuals and bulbs, and lined with native perennials. There’s a buzz of activity in our flower field, but we’re not the only ones at work! Birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects have increased in number as we’ve created a pesticide-free environment that helps life to thrive.
All of our blooms are sustainably grown in season and sold to local flower lovers in the Fairfield County, Connecticut area. We are constantly growing new varieties and expanding our plantings so that we can enrich our community by cultivating beauty.
What Inspires Us
Long before we started farming, one of our guiding principles was to leave a place better than we found it. That concept is still at the heart of what we do. It applies not only to the land and our growing methods, but to our interactions with others as well. “Beauty that runs deep” is part of the legacy we want to leave.
Therefore, our farm embraces the Slow Flowers movement, as it aligns so well with our philosophy:
- Use organic practices out of respect for people and the earth.
- Grow in harmony with the seasons and design with flowers when they naturally bloom.
- Sell locally to connect with our community and to reduce our transportation footprint.
We also participate in these worthy programs:
- The Growing Kindness Project, which encourages us to give flowers to “foster goodwill and make meaningful connections.”
- And the Pollinator Pathway program, which seeks to establish healthy habitats for pollinators and conserve biodiversity — particularly through native plantings.
